Loot Boxes Might Be Coming to Fallout 76

Recent data mining of a patch to Fallout 76 reveals the possibility of loot boxes being added to the game. This possible feature is likely to add yet another layer of controversy to one of Bethesda’s most problematic titles.

The game’s most recent changelog was put together by the community and posted on Reddit by the user Despotak. In the changelog, there are several references to ‘lunch boxes’ and their activators. Lunch boxes were originally a part of the mobile Vault-building game Fallout Shelter, where players could earn or buy lunch boxes for a variety of bonuses and items. Although lunch boxes aren’t in Fallout 76 yet, the changelog makes references to their effects. From what the data miners can tell, the lunch boxes in Fallout 76 will give a variety of buffs and drop special party favors and gift bags.

It wouldn’t be a big deal if these lunch boxes were obtainable as loot in-game, but a prefix in the code labeled ‘ATX’ is an Atom Shop tag, implying that they’ll be purchasable through the game’s premium store. Some more examination of the code reveals a string that reads ‘BuffRadiusGlobal,’ which suggests that lunch boxes (which also supposedly cause a shower of confetti and balloons when opened) apply their bonuses to everyone on the server. Because of this, it seems that lunch boxes can’t be used to get an advantage on others in PvP. However, players suggest that this could translate to a pay-to-win mentality from Bethesda. Also, the addition of lunch boxes would go against what Bethesda said about not including loot crates in Fallout 76. Whatever the case, this is just a look at some code, and we’ll have to wait for Bethesda to make a move.

There’s no official date or hint at when the lunch boxes will be added, but it’s been suggested that it’ll be introduced as part of a holiday event.
