According to recent interview with Game Informer’s Andrew Reiner, an alleged Valve insider claims that Half-Life 3 doesn’t actually exist. During last week’s Game Informer Show, Reiner mentioned having heard from an anonymous source that many different versions of Half-Life 3 had started development over the years, including a real-time strategy version and even a full motion video adventure game. After being pressed for more information from this mysterious source, Reiner finally decided to publish the interview with the supposed Valve insider, and the news is not pretty.
The insider says that though there have been several projects dedicated to bringing Half-Life 3 to life, but they ultimately fall apart due to lack of support from Valve. The insider chalks it up to other games getting more focus at Valve ever since the release of Half-Life 2: Episode 2, such as Counter-Strike, Dota 2 and the Left 4 Dead series, as well as the growing Steam platform and hardware. All these different projects get more attention and eventually those in charge of Valve just forget about Half-Life 3. According to the insider:
There’s something with that third episode that isn’t sitting right with Gabe and other people at Valve. Ultimately it just starves to death. The people that tried to give it life find themselves better off working on other projects.
This comes as sad news to many gamers, but it should be noted that this interview should be taken with a grain of salt. This alleged insider is an unverified source, meaning there’s no real evidence to back up what he is saying. That’s the reason why Reiner was reluctant to release the interview in the first place, but seeing as he did trust the source enough to ultimately publish the interview, it might be time to put those Half-Life 3 confirmed memes to rest.
