The medium of video games famously lets players explore realities and situations different and more exciting than their own. In the wildest cases, this can mean that players take control of a main character who isn’t even human, traversing a world that has been expanded by the imagination of the developers. This creativity has been applied to Heart of Mycelium as evidenced by its new gameplay trailer.
As the name implies, players will control a fungus on a journey through a diverse land of mushrooms and creatures. The main means of traversal will be through a combination of jumps and dashes. The world is shown to have items meant to expand on these features, such as pots that can be dashed into for a boost and the chance to jump again in the air. Later on, the main character is also shown to have a wall-jump ability, which they can use to propel themselves off flat surfaces and enemies alike.
The combat itself is revealed to be tied into the movement, as dashing and jumping off of enemies can inflict damage and allow the player to scale to higher platforms. In addition to their movement abilities, the main character is also shown to have a projectile that hits in a wide area and a large fungal burst. According to the Steam page, there will be over 45 unique enemies spread out between over 10 areas. These areas will also house friendly characters that players can rest with, talk to, or buy new items and abilities from.
The final moments of the trailer see the protagonist jumping through gauntlets of enemies to reach new heights before coming across a massive door about to burst open. As with many games before it, Heart of Mycelium looks to take a unique spin on familiar mechanics while presenting an unseen world from an unconsidered perspective. The game will be available on PC with the release date to be announced.
