Mass Effect Universe Development, Story, & Gameplay Details Revealed

A day after the announcement of the closure of BioWare and development on the next Mass Effect was canceled; a leaked trailer that has since been confirmed to be real of the next Mass Effect, Mass Effect Universe, was released. Now, more details on Mass Effect Universe’s development, story, and gameplay has been revealed by the community members of the Mass Effect council and developers who were working on the game, and more.

According to creator Dantics, who was part of the council, Mass Effect Universe was set 600 years after the Reaper War. The galaxy has been divided into three major factions: humanity, the Krogaans, the Bartarians, and other races who ailled together. The Council races  Players woulformed their own aliance while the Geth emerged as a third superpower. The main narrative would focus on a Galactic Cold War and the player investigating who’s really the one pulling the strings.

Players would take on the role of a customizable N7 agent. While Shepard was the first human Spectre, he or she wasn’t as much of an agent as the new player character would be. He or she was focused more as the military solider who was playing a secret agent. Dantics described the differences as “instead of being a walking gun rack, you’re a cross between John Wick and James Bond.” With that in mind, the N7 agent would be outfitted with experimental technology implanted in them that would give them the ability to hack and manipulate the environment, see through walls, identify systems, and remotely trigger hazards. The N7 agent would also be able to perform brutal, close-range executions, part of the new hand-to-hand combat system that Technical Director Romain Toutain noted wasn’t just for show. Players would be able to swap between gunplay and throwing punches at a moment’s notice.

Missions in Mass Effect Universe would’ve been handcrafted like in the original trilogy “but with Hitman-style freedom in how you complete them,” Dantics said.

Mass Effect Universe was also going to have its own way to take choices from other games into account, a staple in BioWare games. While speaking on the development of the game on Twitch, Toutain explained why the game had the word Universe in its name and how choices from the other games would come into account.

So earlier, my brother was watching Octobinz (Romain Toutain)’s livestream on Twitch. He was the Technical Director on Mass Effect Universe, so I wanted to share some bits he discussed.
As he speaks french, I added subtitles to make it more accessible for everyone!

“Of course all the choices made in the first Mass Effect games were taken into account. One of the reasons why it was called “Mass Effect Universe” is that you had so many choices that you could plug your saves together to create parallel universes. To keep it simple. It’s not exactly how it worked, you had different timelines, basically you could almost generate timelines, kinda like Zero Time Dilemma.”

Reports about Mass Effect Universe’s development timeline have been revealed as well. They say that the game was not 6 years or more away. The trailer that has been released was an internal mood trailer that was meant to show the vision of the game. The story was reportedly good to go, the squadmates were in, hubs were built, NPCs, the new stuff being added to combat and the approach to quests were all figured out. There were also none of the issues that popped up during the development like it did with Veilguard and Andromeda.

The team that started development worked on Universe starting in 2020. Eventually, the game was put on the back burner in order to get Dragon Age: The Veilguard out of the door. After the poor reception, layoffs gutted BioWare, reducing the Mass Effect Universe team to 50-60 people. They were locked in on development. EA leadership was also super high on the game; then the EA acquisition happened, and everything changed.

They no longer wanted to make these games. It’s sports and shooters now.
