A newly authenticated trailer has offered fans a glimpse of the canceled Mass Effect project BioWare was developing before Electronic Arts shut down the studio. The footage suggests the next entry in the science-fiction franchise could have taken a more focused, spy-thriller approach, featuring a new protagonist and the return of original-trilogy companion Liara T’Soni.

The approximately two-minute trailer appeared on Reddit on October 22, one day after reports that EA was closing BioWare and canceling its next Mass Effect game. Although the footage initially circulated without independent verification, Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier subsequently confirmed its authenticity, and IGN also verified the trailer. The video ends with the title Mass Effect: Universe. However, that should be understood as the project’s would-be title, not a confirmed official retail title. The trailer opens with a disclaimer identifying the footage as in-engine material created by a small team using pre-production assets. It offers a look at the project’s intended direction, not a demonstration of finished or fully playable gameplay.
The footage follows a male protagonist wearing an N7-branded trench coat, a design reminiscent of earlier promotional material for the next Mass Effect. During a conversation with an Asari in a bar, he explains that he previously served in the Alliance military but has moved into a new line of work focused on stopping conflicts before they begin. The exchange suggests a story built around covert operations, difficult decisions, and threats that conventional military action might not resolve. The sequence escalates into a confrontation involving gunfire and biotic abilities. Other brief scenes show alien environments and locations that hint at a broader science-fiction setting. The trailer’s most significant reveal comes near its conclusion, when Liara T’Soni appears. Her return would have connected the canceled project to one of the franchise’s most recognizable characters. However, the footage does not establish the complete plot, the game’s precise place in the timeline, or how much of the showcased action would have been interactive.
The leak arrived at a painful moment for fans. BioWare, founded in 1995, helped define narrative-driven role-playing games through franchises including Mass Effect and Dragon Age. EA’s decision to close the studio and cancel its next Mass Effect project ended development on the game shown in the trailer. The footage cannot establish whether the project would ultimately have lived up to the series’ legacy. It does, however, reveal a creative direction that fans can now evaluate: a potential spy-thriller story, a new lead character, and a familiar face from the original trilogy. EA has not announced plans to revive the canceled project. For a franchise built around consequential choices and branching possibilities, the trailer offers a frustrating glimpse of an unrealized future—and a snapshot of what BioWare’s team had been exploring before development ended.
