80 Days Developer Taking Story Submissions from Users for their Next Game

80 Days developer, Inkle, is working on a new medieval strategy game called Pendragon. They are soliciting short fiction from their community to be purchased and featured in the game. The deadline for submissions is May 5. Stories can be submitted using the Ink tool. They must be “500-word, lightly-interactive ‘campfire tales’” and will act as background for the in-game world. Inkle shared an example story to guide users on what it is they are looking for. Between events, characters will tell each other these stories to boost morale. Submissions ranging from ghost stories to fairytales, to similar folklore in the example story are all acceptable.

Pendragon is based in the year 673 AD during medieval times. It takes place in Camelot, a castle and court that is long associated with King Arthur, a legendary British leader. Inkle’s website describes the basic overarching narrative for the game saying “The jealous Sir Mordred has broken the fellowship of the Round Table with hatred and lies. Now King Arthur faces his final battle. Who will keep the dream of Camelot alive?” Players must lead a band of knights and heroes across Britain and reach King Arthur before Camelot and the Road Table are destroyed. Writers should tailor their stories with that in mind.

When it comes to actual gameplay, Pendragon employs a turn-based combat system. The game is strategy and narrative-driven, with a different experience in every event. The board appears to be a collection of tiles that are randomized each time. The personality of the character being controlled will affect the game’s story. Inkle provides examples of this: “Morgana le Fay is treacherous; Queen Guinevere is haunted by her mistakes; Sir Lancelot is French; Sir Gawaine is usually drunk…”
