Never-before-seen footage from the cancelled Kingdom Hearts mobile spin-off, Missing-Link, has been leaked online. This footage provides fans with a small look at what the game’s cinematics, gameplay, and possible story connections to the wider Kingdom Hearts universe. Before this leak, the main information fans knew about the awaited spin-off was that the game would be directed by Tetsuya Nomura and that it would have narrative links to Kingdom Hearts IV, continuing the series’ long tradition of using spin-offs to expand lore concepts and advance the overarching story.

Leaks that predate this more recent one have mostly been composed of screenshots or brief clips. The leaked video includes cinematic sequences, some gameplay footage, user interface elements, some story scenes, and some unfinished content. To date, this leak is the most complete look the public has gotten of Missing-Link. Nothing about the footage has led major outlets to suggest that it might be fabricated, and have reported that the footage appears to be a genuine recording. However, this is still only speculation, as Square Enix has yet to make an official statement on the leak’s authenticity.

The scene in the leak that has sparked the most conversation in the Kingdom Hearts community is the “astronaut scene.” Many fans joked about the apparent competence of the Keyblade wielders depicted, as the cinematic shows several of them being overwhelmed by a Darkside—an enemy that traditionally serves as an introductory boss in the series; because Darkside has long appeared as an early-game encounter, some viewers found the scene unintentionally humorous. Fans have noted similarities between the “astronaut suits” used by the Keyblade wielders in the cinematic and the Keyblade Armor other characters in the series have used. They also seem to serve a similar purpose, as the lore reason given for characters using Keyblade Armor is the protection it offers against Darkness when traveling between worlds, suggesting the astronaut suits may serve a similar function. Aside from the astronauts, the scene goes on to depict what appears to be Quadratum, the main setting for Kingdom Hearts IV, and Scala ad Caelum, the final stage of Kingdom Hearts III and the planned primary setting of Missing-Link.

While most fan discussion around the leaks is still speculative, fans have already begun to dissect the leak for every crumb of information that might link to Kingdom Hearts IV, given the confirmed connection between the anticipated game and Missing-Link before the latter’s cancellation. What remains unknown is how much of Missing-Link’s planned story will still influence Kingdom Hearts IV following the game’s cancellation, how important any of the characters depicted in the leak are or would have been, how the footage was leaked, and what stage of development the leak depicts. In spite of this, the leak has reinvigorated conversations about Missing-Link and Kingdom Hearts IV, while fans continue waiting for more official news about the first mainline entry in the Lost Master Saga.
