Ever since its groundbreaking release in 2016, Niantic’s Pokémon GO has made history in the world of AR games, putting Niantic on the map. At its highest player count, Pokémon GO had approximately 232 million active users. As of November 2024, the estimated player count is 5.9 million, which is still considerable given the game’s expected decline. Regardless, Pokémon GO’s ability to retain millions of users over the years has provided Niantic with a substantial wealth of player data for various purposes, along with their additional comparably successful AR-based mobile games.
Niantic has been advertising its upcoming Pokémon GO Tour: Unova – Los Angeles throughout February, posting about the event on the game’s website and official X (formerly Twitter) account. Pokémon GO’s most recent Unova advertisement was posted via X today, hinting that the mysterious “Deep Black Pokémon” would be present at the LA event. A short video included in the post shows the shadow of this Pokémon as it flies above various shots of the Los Angeles landscape.

The Pokémon GO website describes the Unova – Los Angeles Tour as a limited time in-person event at Rose Bowl Stadium in LA, California. The event is currently priced at $30 per ticket, and is set to take place this February 21, 22, and 23. The page encourages participants to “dive into a tale of truth and ideals as [they] collect Pokémon, discover legendary stories, and experience the community of Pokémon GO in-person.”
Niantic and The Pokémon Company International recently pledged a $1 million donation to aid those affected by the California wildfires. News of this donation was shared via the Pokémon GO News X account on February 13, announcing that Pokémon GO would be “supporting the local community during Pokémon GO Tour: Unova – Los Angeles.” A link directs readers to the Pokémon GO website news page, where the donation is described in further detail.

Both companies plan on donating a collective $1 million to various non-profit organizations that are directly involved in relief efforts concerning the California wildfires. They encourage fans of the game “to stay safe, follow guidance from local officials and government agencies, and be mindful of areas affected by wildfires while participating in gameplay throughout Los Angeles County.” Those participating in the Pokémon GO Tour: Unova – Los Angeles should meet up with local Community Ambassadors in the Los Angeles area, where groups can play in safe areas.
Pokémon GO is a free-to-play mobile game available on both iOS and Android devices.
