Oftentimes, good news in the gaming world can turn up in the most unexpected places. In the case of Agatsuma Entertainment’s ARPG, Code of Princess, sometimes that news can crop up in the most unlikely manner. Evidently, the game may be making a splash on Steam in the very near future. But first, we’ll need to explore the rather confusing backstory of just how this cult 3DS title came to be entwined with the world of PC gaming.
Agatsuma Entertainment was a Japanese developer and publisher primarily known for making Code of Princess and Sayonara Umihara Kawase (an IP which they had acquired in 2013). The company was liquidated last December; subsequently, the Umihara Kawase trilogy disappeared from Steam entirely. The series returned to Steam this February, though, and is once again available for purchase.
According to the above re-release page, a Japanese e-commerce and publishing company called Degica now handles the Umihara license. Degica, who is known for publishing the RPG Maker series, acquired the series sometime between 2015 and this January.
Though no news reports online mention it, Degica may also have acquired the rest of Agatsuma’s licenses in the January deal. In this innocuous discussion thread started last year on Sayonara Umihara Kawase Shun‘s Steam community page, “Developer” Artie responded yesterday with the following comment:
Oh ye of little faith. We should have an announcement later this week. 🙂
Though Artie’s profile page states that he works for Solest Games, it’s probably safe to assume that he also works for Degica, given his official announcements for Umihara Kawase Shun’s Steam release. A quick search on Degica’s gaming website does bring up a certain Labyrinthine Dreams as having been developed by Solest Games.
Degica’s Twitter feed, meanwhile, posted a very promising tweet earlier today:
What could this be? Another game is coming to #Steam… #Mystery #teaser pic.twitter.com/0tpE3sdF8W
— DegiGames (@DegiGames) March 29, 2016
The sword in question belongs to Code of Princess’ main character, Princess Solange Blanchefleur de Lux.
Keep in mind that neither Artie’s post nor Degica’s tweet are by no means confirmations of Code of Princess‘ re-release. But given the circumstances, it’s highly possible that Steam users will soon become familiar with a little-appreciated 3DS title.
Stay tuned for more updates.
