CONVERGENCE: A League of Legends Story Review

Developed by Double Stallion Games and published by Riot Forge, Convergence: A League of Legends Story is the latest entry set in the League of Legends universe, stepping outside of the well-known Summoner’s Rift to explore a smaller but darker slum, Zaun.

Convergence: A League of Legends Story is a singple-player action-filled platformer like its predecessors, Metroid and Castlevania.

Zaun, a steampunk city built in the shadows beneath the seemingly shiny tech utopia, Piltover, is a hideous maze of alleyways and backstreets. Its rusting infrastructure, ruined buildings, and spills create a chaotic landscape where the concept of polite society goes to die. In this lawless realm, warring drug barons hold dominion, while fear and brutality serve as the city’s oppressive enforcers. The game follows Ekko as as he investigates a mysterious explosion in his home of Zaun and embarking on a mission to save his present and future.

Let’s start of with the combat and the platforming of Convergence, it feels great and a lot of fun. At first, combat only seems to consist of hitting enemies with a basic attack and occassionally dodging, but as you progress through the game, new abilities and inventions are unlocked gradually to provide a sense of mastery and inject freshness in both combat and platforming.

Eklo has many gadgets at his disposal to help him throughout the journey, one of the most frequently used and helpful is his Z-Drive. This device allows him to turn back the clock by a few seconds. It’s really handy if you get hit a few too many times or fall into an abyss, at a click of a button and you can reverse time back by a few seconds and return into the action.

There’s also an upgrade system for gadgets and a skill tree system, obtained through defeating enemies and exploration. This provides many customizations to Ekko’s playstyle, making each playthrough unqiue. The abundance of combinations ensures that no single ability or gadget upgrade feels mandatory, allowing players to experiment and find their preferred playstyle.

The variety of enemies throughout the game keeps combat encounters enganging, exciting and varied. Each enemy type is designed to be dealt with different strategies, which adds more depth to combat and makes every combat encounter feel more distinct. Combat really kicks up to another notch when waves of various enemies are present on screen at one time, pushing players to think fast, act fast, and use all abilites available to come out victorious.

Another thing I applaud Double Stallion is the ability to adjust specific aspects of gameplay at any point instead of having a fixed difficulty setting. Aspects such as enemy aggressiveness, battle compositions, and traversal layouts have their own difficulty levels, along with the ability to adjust Ekko’s health and base charges for Rewind, Ekko’s basic ability. The level of customization ensures that players of all skill levels can enjoy the game at their own pace, without sacrificing challenge or engagement.

Convergence adheres to the tried-and-true design principles of traditional Metroidvania games, offering players a vast and interconnected map to navigate. As you explore this expansive world, you’ll encounter a variety of platforming challenges, enticing collectibles, and intense battles against formidable enemies. While Convergence leans more towards a linear experience compared to other Metroidvania titles, it compensates by delivering a captivating plot and a well-paced gameplay experience.

While Convergence: A League of Legends Story offers an immensely enjoyable experience, there are certain areas that could benefit from improvement. One notable aspect is the duration of Ekko’s full power. As players unlock the game’s final chapter, Ekko’s abilities reach their pinnacle and become incredibly satisfying to wield. However, the game concludes shortly thereafter, leaving limited opportunity to fully explore and make the most of Ekko’s newfound abilities without starting another playthrough. Extending the time for players to access all abilities a chapter or two earlier would have provided a more extended period to relish in Ekko’s enhanced capabilities.

Furthermore, providing additional backstory on Ekko and Zaun would have enhanced the game’s overall depth. While fans of League of Legends and viewers of the Arcane series may already be acquainted with Ekko’s background, newcomers would benefit from more context. Offering glimpses into Ekko’s past or delving deeper into Zaun’s history, even if briefly, would have contributed to a more comprehensive understanding of the character and the world he inhabits. Given that Future Ekko is a central element in the game, exploring Ekko’s past, present, and future in a more complete manner would have enriched the experience and provided a well-rounded portrayal for those unfamiliar with the character.

Overall, Convergence: A League of Legends Story offers an immersive and satisfying adventure with plenty of room for personalization. With its polished platforming and combat mechanics, customizable difficulty options, and a captivating storyline set in the League of Legends universe, it has much to offer both fans and newcomers alike. While there are areas for improvement, the game successfully delivers an immersive and satisfying adventure with plenty of room for personalization.
