We all remember going to the arcade and sneaking away to play certain games not meant for kids, since they cannot play them at home. Some of those games, while still not meant for kids, aren’t as bad as they are presented. Blood: Refreshed Supply is one of the games that aren’t as scary or gruesome as you would think, but still warrants the M rating. This remake can be very fun to go around and take down zombies and cult members.
Blood: Refreshed Supply follows Caleb, an undead gunslinger on a quest for revenge against his former demonic master, Tchernobog. He was once a great commander, now he has returned for vengeance and answers to why he was slain despite his loyalty. Like most arcade games, it doesn’t tell you the story as you play the game, and you have to go out of your way to learn the backstory. If you don’t care about the story, then this won’t bother you and you can just play and enjoy.
This game improves on the original by improving the graphics of both the gameplay and the cutscenes. Although the game still doesn’t tell you the controls when you start playing. You have to go through the menus in order to find the controls, and this made it hard for me to enjoy the game. I wasn’t even able to go through the first door because despite me pressing every button, I didn’t know how to open the door. While I know this was a remake, this game could have benefited from a tutorial level or at least a control guide that would show up as soon as you start the game.
While playing, you will have to look around for supplies, unless you want to only use your pitchfork to fight. While you are taking down enemies they might drop weapons and ammo, giving you plenty of toys to play with. You will have to fight cultists, zombies, rats and other monsters on your way to vengeance. The rats are the most annoying enemies to fight. Not only are they everywhere, they are hard to kill and they keep following you until you kill them. While they don’t have a lot of health, they have small hit boxes, making it hard to hit them.
All the levels give off a scary and eerie feeling when you explore them. You will have to explore and examine everything and I mean everything. Some walls will have secret passages, bushes might have weapons or ammo, and random rocks might have keys you need to proceed. You will have to keep an eye out however, because a monster might come out and get you. Every level will have what you would expect from this type of game. You got haunted forests, churches, graveyards, it’s all here and scary, the perfect atmosphere to get your blood pumping. I’m always on my toes, trying to find secrets and making sure not to succumb to the undead.
This game has a lot of cool improvements that makes this game good. Unlike the original game, this version has an easier difficulty setting. This is perfect for people who are just getting into this type of gameplay. The original was very hard, making people not enjoy this game at first. But now, new players can enjoy the game and improve their skills. Once you get used to how the game plays, you can increase the difficulty at any time until you get your ideal experience. More games should have this option to get more people into their franchises.
Another interesting mechanic is that you get to choose any level to start your playthrough from. You can start at the beginning like usual, or at the final level to cut straight to the chase, and everything in between. You don’t see many games have this mechanic at the start of the game. Most games will have you completed the game at least once to unlock this. This gives off a different experience for players. If they only want to play a specific level, they don’t have to play through the whole game just to relive one level. I still recommend you play the first level first since it will let you get used to the game before the real challenge begins.
In conclusion, Blood: Refreshed Supply, is a fun experience. From gunning down zombies, exploring dark areas, finding secrets and seeking revenge on your former master, You will not be short on a fun and scary experience.
