As many of you know, Nintendo revealed the Switch last night. During the event, they revealed the Switch’s price and release date ($299.99 and March 3, for anyone who missed it), showed off and talked about some of the mechanics of the console and had plenty of trailers for upcoming Switch games. This morning, starting at 6:30am PT / 9:30am ET, Nintendo Treehouse had a live event in which they went into more detail about the games themselves, rather than the console, which was the focus of the event last night.
The first game showcased was a new IP called Arms, a fighting game in which the characters have extendable arms. In this game, the Joy-Con (the controller for the Switch) is mainly used in Wii Remote-like motion controls. The game features different characters who all have different powers and specialties.
Splatoon 2 was shown and some new weapons were showcased, such as the Splat Duelies (not sure about the spelling), which allows the player to shoot ink out of both hands and also gives the character the ability to perform a dodge roll to either side. There are also some changes in returning weapons, such as the Roller now being able to shoot ink after holding down the attack button.
Super Bomberman R was showcased and was revealed to have a story mode that can be played with one or two players. There are eight different Bombermen the player(s) can choose from, all represented with different colors. The gameplay itself is reminiscent of the earlier Bomberman games, but, of course, with better graphics.
A new version of Mario Kart 8 called Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was confirmed and is similar to the original version on the Wii U but with more characters and karts. Some of the new characters include the Splatoon Inklings, King Boo and Dry Bones. The game also features two items slots, as opposed to the one in the original Mario Kart 8.
Of course they had to show off Zelda: Breath of the Wild and its massively open world. Included in the game is an interesting horse taming mechanic, without which the horses may not always obey you (because, I mean, they’re wild horses). There is also an ability to go in slow-motion and finely aim your bow and arrow.
Another game shown was the newly announced Super Mario Odyssey. Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, explained that Super Mario 64 was geared more towards hardcore Mario gamers, whereas later games, such as Super Mario Galaxy, were intended for more casual gamers. According to Miyamoto, Super Mario Odyssey will be a return to the Super Mario 64 style targeted towards veteran Mario players.
Other games discussed were Ultra Street Fighter II, puzzle game Snipperclips, strategy game Has-Been Heroes and party game 1-2 Switch. The stream went on for almost six hours and you can watch it below.
