Available on itch.io for free, Yarntown is a Bloodborne inspired RPG that reimagines the world of Yharnam as a short Zelda-esque dungeon crawler. Created by Max Mraz using the Solarus gaming engine, Yarntown is relatively short love letter and tribute to From Software’s Bloodborne on the PS4. A description of Yarntown is offered on the game’s itchi.io page, “Welcome to Yarntown, a Zelda-like tribute to Bloodborne. Explore the streets of a cursed, gothic town, hunting beasts and uncovering twisted bosses.” The developer also released a Tweet for the game featuring a short gameplay trailer along with screenshots. The trailer showed off one of the game’s bosses, along with a few different areas of Central Yharnam that may be familiar to fans of Bloodborne.
Though the world resembles Bloodborne, combat in Yarntown is not as difficult and precise. With controls simplified, players will still be able to do a number of the things they could in the original. Dodge rolling and collecting Blood Vials for health restoration are still major parts of the game’s combat for example, but the difficulty has apparently been significantly lessened. Father Gascoigne and the Cleric Beast make their return as the two bosses in the game, with unique Zelda-like redesigns for both of the combat areas. Once both bosses are defeated, a message from the developer will send a special message for the game’s completion.
Yarntown is available for download now via itch.io for free. The game also supports Playstation controller support and a description of available controls is offered on the website, along with installation instructions. The developer has not announced any plans for future content, but reported bugs and crashes can be reported and future fixes may come.
