Y2K-Style Bug Made WWE 2K20 Unplayable in 2020

WWE 2K20 had an unfortunate debut in October 2019, with the game suffering from so many instances of game-breaking bugs that Sony chose to offer refunds on digital purchases of the title, which is developed by the California-based studio Visual Concepts and published by 2K Games. The change of year to 2020 this week brought a new issue to light for the problem-plagued WWE 2K20, as players discovered a Y2K-style bug that rendered the game unplayable on PC and consoles with up-to-date 2020 calendars.

According to reports from WWE 2K20 players, after their system’s date rolled over to January 1, 2020 the game began experiencing issues with crashing when trying to load the game’s main modes. The nature of the crashes is a lot like the “Year 2000 Problem” concerns that computers and major systems would stop working properly with the new millennium, as internal calendar storage would become confused by reading the date as a two-digit date as the year 1900.

WWE 2K2o players including Twitter user @TheShiningDown shared reported that reverting their system date back to December 31, 2019 resolved the issue and allowed the game to launch all the modes suffering from 2020-related crashes.

After reports of 2020-related crashes in WWE 2K20 circulated among the game’s player base and on social media, 2K Games’s official Support Twitter account tweeted that a fix was being implemented to allow the game to run on systems with an accurate calendar date.

The fix is accessible to WWE 2K20 players by quitting and restarting the game, which 2K Support says will implement the fix. As no patch is required to solve the issues with crashing, it is likely something that occurred with the game’s servers.

WWE 2K20 is the first game in the WWE franchise since Japanese developer Yuke’s departed after 20 years to work on an independent wrestling-based project, and the series is now developed by partner studio Visual Concepts. Currently WWE 2K20 has received “mostly negative” reviews on Steam, largely due to issues arising from its rocky launch and missing in-game items for those with Collector’s Editions.

WWE 2K20 is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Angel Tuohy: I'm a fan of a lot of different games in different genres, and my favorites are Dark Souls, Final Fantasy, Street Fighter, Tekken, Persona, Resident Evil, and NieR. I think games are a brilliant way to tell a story, but it's important to me that the game is fun to play too. I've recently received my Master's degree in Literature.
