Microsoft announced today a June update for the Xbox One to allow external storage support, displaying actual names for Live accounts and other new features.
The desire to add more storage space is now possible with the new Xbox One update for June. A benefit of extra storage will let someone not worry about running out of room on their hard drive. As games are more complex and downloaded files are increasing, 500 GB internal hard drives for every Xbox One may not make the cut. A 256 GB, or higher, hard drive can connect to the Xbox One via 3.0 USB slots. Up to two external storage are going to be supported for each system.
A press release says the “External Storage Support” will allow gamers to “copy and move games, apps and game add-on” and take the drives along to another persons house. Content on the hard drives can be used as long as an Xbox Live sign-in verifies the person’s identity on another console.
Another addition to the update is going to let Xbox Live users identify each other with “real names.” The press release explains that a 1000 friend list and uncapped followers of a Live account potentially creates confusion of who each person is on these list.
“Now with real names feature you can recognize people on your friends list,” the press release says. “And more easily discover people you already know who are on Xbox Live.”
Names will not show when playing games and the new feature allows users to be selective in who sees their names.
Smart Glass is also receiving fine tuning in the update by bringing a new batch of interesting features. For those who decide to use the app available for smart phones can use Universal Remote Control. This is going to let people view all their television channels and access their television’s app through the Smart Glass app.
There is even the ability to set recording times onto a DVR. Recorded programs can also be accessed in the app. Achievements and notifications from Xbox Live are now viewable on the app, so now members can get information when no logged on a console. The feature is reminiscent of Facebook updates and notifications sent to your phone.
Canada, UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy are getting a TV and OneGuide support come June with voice commands. Other improvements, like device management, will give “better power management and control of your devices and improved compatibility with more devices.”
The new update is among other announcements from the company in the past week. A Kinectless Xbox One will be on the market at $399, down from $499 price tag, in June and a Halo 5 reveal.
