Xbox Under Fire After Using AI Art In Indie Game Advertisement

An advertisement promoting indie games on Xbox platforms drew harsh criticism for using an AI-generated art Friday morning according to Kotaku.

The initial post by Xbox’s indie developer program ID@Xbox wasn’t anything out of the ordinary, mainly asking people on Twitter to record their favorite indie games of 2023. The image coinciding with the post showed children sliding down a snowy hill with the Xbox logo at the center. That said, it didn’t take too long for people to realize the tell-tell signs of AI generation in the image.

While Microsoft is at the forefront of the AI algorithm industry, thanks to its partnership with OpenAI on ChatGPT, the use of AI imagery in this post rubbed people the wrong way particularly due to the negative impact AI image generation is currently having on the written and visual arts communities.

ID@Xbox’s post was taken down shortly after the outrage began, and is considered to be the latest in a growing trend of companies slowly incorporating AI Art in their work.

Xbox has yet to officially acknowledge the situation.

Caitlyn Taylor: New media and entertainment have been apart of my life since I was very young, and I don't think that interest will ever go away. When I'm bored, I immerse myself in lore videos no matter the length.
