Xbox president Sarah Bond has created a new team that is dedicated to game preservation by ensuring that their games will be forward-compatible with future hardware, which is planned to be a significant technical leap.
Windows Central received emails from Bond, who was promoted to president in Oct. 2023, that were sent to her team. Microsoft confirmed that the emails were genuine. In them, Bond gave a brief rundown of various Xbox initiatives, including the technical prowess of their next console.
“It’s been nearly six months since we came together as an organization. Our collective achievements in that timeframe are tremendous. Everyone should feel incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved and excited about the opportunities ahead,” Bond wrote. “We are moving full speed ahead on our next generation hardware, focused on delivering the biggest technological leap ever in a generation.”
She also spoke about the company’s new team, which will work to ensure that Xbox’s game library will be compatible with future generations of hardware so that those games do not become unplayable when old console stores shut down.
“We have formed a new team dedicated to game preservation, important to all of us at Xbox and the industry itself,” Bond wrote. “We are building on our strong history of delivering backwards compatibility to our players, and we remain committed to bringing forward the amazing library of Xbox games for future generations of players to enjoy.”
Bond also touched on a few other minor internal plans and developments at Xbox. They are focusing on innovating in the realm of Gaming AI to benefit both players and developers. The team is also working on bringing more Activision-Blizzard games to Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass after Diablo IV’s inclusion caused Xbox to become the top platform for the game.
Bond ended the email by affirming Xbox’s consistency in a time of turmoil for the industry, with mass layoffs, an increasing focus on endless live-service games, and a shrinking console market.
“At a time when the gaming industry’s growth is flattening, ours continues,” she said.
