It’s safe to say that Microsoft has had some serious growth over the past 12 months, especially their gaming division. Xbox has had quite a busy year with the release of the Xbox Series X|S. As of this writing, both systems are still fairly hard to come by, as is Sony’s PlayStation 5. This along with the major boost in software sales has catapulted Xbox to its best fiscal year ever. Video Game Statistician Daniel Ahmad has tweeted out some amazing new numbers for the company, along with a graph that shows the year-to-year jump for the overall brand.
Microsoft’s Gaming division (Xbox) reported revenue of $15.37 billion in FY 21 (July 1, 2020 – June 30, 2021).
– Best year ever for Xbox
– Revenue up 32.8% YoY
– Primarily driven by $2.3bn increase in software / subscription revenue.

As you can see in the tweet above, Xbox’s overall revenue for the fiscal year sits at a staggering $15.37 billion. As we already mentioned, this makes the fiscal year report the best that Xbox has ever had, with an insane revenue jump of 32.8%. We also mentioned that the new hardware that launched in November was also a big factor, as the Xbox Series X/Series S shot the company’s hardware sales to more than 92% in revenue. However, the biggest contribution to this growth was easily the software sales.
Powered by both new and old software performing at a much higher rate on the new hardware, Xbox’s software revenue exploded with a $2.3 billion increase in sales. This also includes those who have subscriptions to the Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which gives access to a vast library of titles on both Xbox systems and PC. This was more than likely boosted by the company’s purchase of Zenimax last year, which is the parent company of Bethesda and all of their properties, as it added all of their IPs to the service. The bottom line here is that despite going neck and neck with Sony all of these months, Xbox has shown that their service model works, and it works extremely well.
