The puzzle and platformer aspects of games usually represent two different kinds of challenges for players and are kept separate in most cases to ensure each is testing the appropriate skill. As with most trends in video games, however, a number of titles bring both elements together to create the puzzle platformer genre, defined by identifying challenges and executing their solutions together. Announced last month, an upcoming game in the genre, Will O Wing, by Studio Null Games recently received a demo and gameplay trailer showing off some of what will be possible when the game releases.
The trailer begins with players controlling what the game’s official website calls the spirit. It is capable of a variety of jumps, including small mid-air hops to adjust height across long distances and a large jump capable of scaling tall cliffs. The puzzle aspect of the game shows itself when the spirit is confronted with a room housing rotating obstacles, forcing the player to move counterclockwise with the hazards to reach the end.
As the spirit approaches a stone statue, they begin glowing and transform into the shepherd. The new character is taller, slower, and less agile, but has the ability to teleport through walls and obstacles. From there, the trailer begins showing the off the applications of both characters’ strengths, including puzzles where players must swap between spirit and shepherd is succession to reach the end. Along the way, the website also indicates that players will gain access to even more abilities by exploring their ties to the worlds, each of which is open for them to explore in the order they choose.
Following the recent release of the Will O Wing demo, many positive comments have been left on the new trailer about the game’s feel and soundtrack. More information about the game’s release date and story surrounding a lost civilization has been promised to be available while the game continues development.
