White Owls Studio announced new information for their PlayStation 4 and PC game The Good Life, which is currently in the crowdfunding stage via Fig. White Owls plans to reach a hefty goal of $1.5 million by October 12th and currently has over 2,000 backers with seventeen different types of rewards to buy for contribution. On the crowdfunding website, The Good Life is described as,
“…a game where you enjoy daily life in a rural English town and pay off your debt little by little. Aside from that, you can also use money to buy clothing, decorate your house, or invest it in facilities that will allow you to make even more money. As you pay off your debt, you’ll uncover more of the town’s secrets and get wrapped up in surprising incidents.”
The role-playing aspect of the game comes from player’s taking on the role of Naomi, the protagonist riddled with debt who arrives in town and gets caught up in a sudden murder investigation. Players will also get to play as Naomi in animal form as a cat or a dog depending on the version they buy. Initially White Owls released information on the game that revealed the townspeople would turn into cats at night, but now they have updated their rewards to reflect the new dogs version that will also be released.
According to the update, “the player can also turn into a cat or a dog for one week each month (during your period) and explore the town at night. These parts will feature a completely new and fun style of gameplay.” A promotional trailer for The Good Life showcases the update to include the game’s dog version as well as some of the skills that will be used after characters change into their animal forms. The trailer also displays the unique 3D CGI art style, but some portions of the game may appear in 2D, such as Naomi’s photographs.
Some key differences between the cat and dog versions include the cat’s ability to “crawl through cramped spaces and climb across tree branches and roofs,” and the dog’s ability to “dig in the ground, follow scent trails, and move larger objects.” These unique skills will also change what happens in the story, so a person playing as a cat may have a different outcome and path they follow in the game compared to a person playing as a dog. The Good Life will primarily be a single player game as well, but both versions will be compatible with each other for the online multiplayer feature which lets players visit other towns in their cat or dog form.
The Good Life currently has thirteen days left to reach its $1.5 millon crowdfunding goal on Fig by October 12.
