It’s a question that’s on a number of gamers’ minds: Where exactly is Dead Island 2? The zombie franchise debuted its first title in September of 2011 after one of the most well-known and also unrelated announcement trailers of all time. But, Dead Island performed well enough for a follow-up game to be released in Dead Island: Riptide in 2013. The publisher of the series, Deep Silver, first announced the existence of Dead Island 2 at E3 2014 with the trailer shown below, along with a significant amount of gameplay footage that was shown at Gamescom 2014, which is also below.
So four years later the gaming community is asking: Where is the game? Back in 2016 Deep Silver stated that while the game was pegged to release that year, they would be getting a new developer. Sumo Digital, the studio responsible for LittleBigPlanet 3, took over in place of Yager after the developer filed for insolvency. Check out our previous discussion on Deep Silver making this change. Since the change in developer, not much has been publicly released about Dead Island 2. A game engine seemed to be in place for the supposed cooperative zombie-survival game, but in the two years since Sumo Digital has taken over fans have been left in the dark.
However, the entire franchise has not been left untouched, which has left some fans wondering. Back in July of this year Deep Silver and Fishlabs released Dead Island: Survivors, which is a mobile, tower-defense game. It was an unexpected and frankly uncalled for game that frustrated the awaiting Dead Island community. When directly questioned about the state of Dead Island 2 Deep Silver responded on Twitter this month:
Dead Island 2 is still in development, we’ll have more to share at a later date.

Even if Dead Island 2’s development is happening behind closed doors it’s clear that there’s a community that is still excited about the game’s eventual release. It’s assumed that Dead Island 2 will be available for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
