The character Carmen Sandiego is a cultural phenomenon recognized worldwide for her iconic red trench coat, wide-brimmed hat, and enduring sense of mystique. She first appeared as the villain of an educational computer game by Broderbund in 1985 called Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? Carmen has made her name known since then, appearing in Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? from 1991–1995, a live-action game show focused on geography trivia, Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego? from 1994–1999, an animated series following her heists against ACME agents, and The Carmen Sandiego animated show, produced by Netflix and released in 2019. Netflix’s take on Carmen Sandiego depicts her in a modernized sense, portraying Carmen as more of an anti-hero than a villain.
Now Carmen Sandiego is coming to mobile devices in the form of a strategic puzzle game by Gameloft and Harper Collins Productions. The game’s release date was recently announced by Gameloft in a website newsletter and post from the company’s official X (formerly Twitter) account. The announcement mentions Carmen Sandiego’s upcoming 40th anniversary and encourages potential players to pre-order the game in order to celebrate the occasion. The Carmen Sandiego mobile game will be released exclusively through Netflix Games, meaning players with an active Netflix subscription will play for free. The game’s price on console and PC will range from $29.99 to $39.99 following its launch, making the Netflix Game version a steal. The announcement reveals that Carmen Sandiego is set to launch on mobile devices January 28, 2025.
The game will follow “an exciting chapter in the beloved franchise, continuing Carmen’s journey as a vigilante who now steals from thieves to protect the world’s treasures.” As a Netflix Game, Carmen Sandiago plans on expanding on the events Netflix’s animated Carmen Sandiago show. It will take players across the globe to track down the VILE crime syndicate, featuring 3d environments full of puzzle solving mechanics and mystery-solving gameplay. Gameloft believes that it will “deliver a fresh, immersive experience for both long-time fans and newcomers.”
Anyone interested in trying out Carmen Sandiago can pre-order the game on the App Store and Google Play Store, although a Netflix subscription will be required to play following its launch on January 28.
