Studio head Fiona Sperry unveiled When Tides Turn’s first project today, an open-world racing sequel called Wreckreation 2, set for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Sperry co-founded Criterion Games earlier in her career before this latest venture.
Most of the people at When Tides Turn came over from Three Fields Entertainment, the studio behind the original Wreckreation, which has now become its own independently owned company. The switch came out of difficult period for the team: not long after the first game shipped, staff were told layoffs were a real possibility before the studio regrouped under its new name.
Wreckreation 2 swaps the original’s sprawling, sparsely populated map for something smaller and denser. Heartbreak City is a coastal setting that replaces open highway driving with tighter downtown blocks, an industrial waterfront, elevated freeway sections, and an airport property doubling as track space, laced with side alleys meant to hide faster routes for players who are adventurous and willing to look. Art director Phil Pillpot tied the change directly to complaints about the first game’s world feeling underpopulated and static, something he said the team wanted to fix.
Combat has changed too. Crashes now carry noticeably more weight, with vehicles crumpling harder and shedding parts on impact instead of bouncing off each other the way the original’s looser physics allowed. On the mode side, Marked Man and Pursuit both return alongside a new addition called Eliminator, while Blackspot, a mode built for the first game but cut before launch, is finally making its debut in the sequel.
Sperry said the studio spent six months gathering direct player input on everything from handling to world design ahead of the announcement, describing the approach as “building this game with the players, not just for them.”
An official release date has not been announced. Wreckreation 2 is available to wishlist now on Steam.
