The version of Warframe launched in 2013 is a much different beast to what is playable today. The game has taken on aspects of open-world gameplay, coupled with story-driven quests, and overall has become a much more polished game in the six years since it’s release. What was lacking, however, was a high-end opening cinematic, though thanks to a new announcement by Digital Extremes at TennoCon 2019, a new cinematic is set to be added to the game by the end of this year or early next year. The cinematic begins with a war-torn planet, invaded by Grineer, a clone-army of sorts, who seek destruction and control over others. After discovering a tower amongst the chaos, a young girl presents what look like purple lotus flowers to the statues of three legendary Tenno: Excalibur, Mag, and Volt. As she places each flower, the cinematic cuts to scenes of the three warriors fighting off a similar invasion years ago, exemplifying why they are legends in the first place. As the Grineer close in on the tower, the girl disappears, lightning crashes from the sky, and the three Tenno awake once again, presumably to lay waste to their invaders.
The new cinematic was directed by heavy-hitter Dan Trachtenberg who had previously directed 10 Cloverfield Lane, The Black Mirror episode “Playtest,” and the upcoming Uncharted movie. Trachtenberg is self-proclaimed “huge, huge Warframe fan” and had connected with Digital Extremes through Twitter. After offering his directing skills, he and the team decided that the game needed a “new player experience,” eventually materializing into the cinematic intro. The intro’s purpose is to “contextualize the game, show how you play, and why you play, but also be meaningful in a different way for us veterans of the game.” The new trailer is slated to hit the game by the end of 2019 or by early 2020, though no concrete details have been released as of yet.
