It would seem that some players are so eager to play Apex Legends that they’re jumping the gun and downloading the wrong game. According to a Reddit post by Andreas from Fast Travel Games, their game, which bears both strikingly similar name and logo, has seen a massive uptick in sales since the release of the immensely popular battle royale game. Apex Construct is a VR game available on Steam and has fooled some players (through no wrongdoings from Fast Travel Games) into downloading it mistakenly.
According to Andreas, the VR developer saw a 4000% increase in visits to the Apex Construct Steam page since the launch of Apex Legends, noting that the latter game isn’t even available on Steam, but instead available as an EA Origin exclusive. Apex Construct has now sold more copies of the game in the past week than in all of 2018 since the game’s launch in March. The sales saw the greatest increase in China, most likely due to Apex Legend‘s absence in the country for now, though Chinese tech giant Tencent hopes to change that.
While players who downloaded the incorrect game understandably feel duped (and have taken to the Steam review page to say just that), Fast Travel Games finds a fair bit of humor in the situation. Andreas and those at Fast Travel are expecting most, if not all, of the units sold in error to be refunded but are enjoying the bit of PR while it lasts. They say that the Steam Community team are looking into the situation; hopefully, they’ll be able to scrub the erroneous reviews, seeing as the VR studio is on the losing end of a bad situation.
Just to set the record straight: Apex Legends is available for free on PC (through the EA Apex Legends website), PS4, and Xbox One, while Apex Construct is available through Steam, the Oculus Store, and the PlayStation Store for $29.99 and requires a VR setup to play.
