Remember in the 80s and 90s when the idea of virtual reality, or ‘VR’, got really popular? The fantasy of being able to totally immerse yourself in an imaginary world wasn’t lived up to by the reality of chunky goggles and gloves that made your head hurt and your hands sweat after 10 minutes. Well, nearly three decades later, the Virtuix Omni seeks to fulfill the dream of Lawnmower Man-style VR.
The Omni is a treadmill that supposedly allows you to move around a virtual world. When combined with the Oculus Rift it offers the complete virtual reality package of sight and mobility. Well, not really complete because we’re missing gloves for tactile feedback and interactivity, but it’s a step closer.
If you’re ready to embrace the future you can pre-order the Virtuix Omni for $500, which comes with the treadmill, tracking hardware and software, and a special belt and shoes. And hey, why not get the two-pack for only $1,019, which gets you a second treadmill and three pairs of special Omni shoes? The Omni has an estimated shipping date of March 2014.
