Phil Spencer’s famous shelf has struck again! The Xbox Head posted a picture on Twitter to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Fallout franchise, which showed off his back shelf that was chalked full of Fallout memorabilia. However, some on the internet have spotted an unknown device that is sitting at the very top that is barely visible. Some of those with keen eyes, including well known video game aficionado Nibel, have begun to speculate that this is the long rumored Keystone streaming console. However, the official Xbox Twitter account has debunked this claim by cheekily responding to Spencer’s actual post.
According to the Xbox account, the device that is sitting atop Spencer’s shelf is a “old prototype” and nothing more. This was confirmed with Digital Trends in which the company refers to the item as an “old prototype of Keystone.” Xbox claims that they made the decision to change Keystone from the aforementioned prototype due to their desire to “refocus our efforts on new approach.” The Keystone project has been in development for quite some time, but it doesn’t appear to be nearing completion anytime soon. This was hinted at earlier this year when the company said that the device needed some more time before it was ready to launch.
Regardless of how you want to extrapolate this entire thing, the fact remains that Phil Spencer put the device on the shelf for all of us to see. He’s done this before several times before, such as when he had the Ludens statue sitting behind him on the shelf. Ludens is of course the mascot of Kojima Productions, Hideo Kojima’s production company. This alluded to, and was eventually confirmed, to the partnership between the two which was revealed this past Summer. Bottom line, if we see something out of place on Phil Spencer’s shelf, it more than likely means something is going to happen.
