Unity Unveils Dedicated Engine for Netflix Games

Unity has announced a dedicated version of its engine for Netflix Games. This version of the Unity engine was tailored specifically for Netflix Games, made to reduce the work required for developers to build titles for the Netflix Games ecosystem. The initiative is intended to make developing games for Netflix Games faster and more efficient.

The unique version of the engine was created as a collaboration between Unity and Netflix. Rather than requiring Netflix-affiliated developers to manually integrate Netflix’s services into standard Unity projects, this dedicated engine configuration was designed around Netflix Games’ requirements. This specialized engine is expected to streamline development for studios seeking to target the Netflix platform. Many of the changes made to this version of Unity were seen in Night School Studio’s Black Mirror: Thronglets. The game served as the catalyst for many improvements, as it helped identify common development needs that could be incorporated into future engine features. This means that the engine grew out of production experience rather than being designed entirely in advance.

The primary goal of the specialized engine is to reduce platform-specific engineering and duplicated work. Instead of every developer implementing the same integrations independently, the goal is for many of these capabilities to be built directly into the engine. Rather than focusing on rebuilding platform functionality, Netflix wants developers to spend more time building games. This announcement reinforces that Netflix remains committed to games despite past restructuring and studio closures. Netflix appears to be investing in development infrastructure that should make publishing on the service easier over the longer term.

This collaboration between the software developer and the streaming platform resembles traditional console development. This specialized engine is very similar to the software development kits (SDKs) used by companies such as Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft for their console platforms. Considering the similarity, this can be seen as a sign that Netflix views Games as a long-term platform rather than simply another mobile game publisher.
