Undertale Twitter Hints at New Project

Today, the official Twitter account for the beloved 2015 indie game Undertale took on some rather strange changes. The header, profile photo and even the name of the page have been completely blacked out, the only thing remaining is the @UnderTale handle. The wipe of all identifying features of the account was accompanied by a string of cryptic tweets throughout the course of the morning.

WELCOME. HAVE YOU BEEN LOOKING FOR ME? HOW WONDERFUL. I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR YOU AS WELL. I HAVE SOMETHING I WANT TO SHOW YOU. SOMETHING I THINK YOU WILL FIND VERY, VERY, INTERESTING. BUT IT IS NOT COMPLETE YET. NO IT IS FAR FROM COMPLETE. THUS I HAVE A SMALL FAVOUR TO ASK OF YOU. RETURN HERE IN [24] HOURS. AT THAT TIME, I WILL ASK YOU A FEW QUESTIONS. THEN USING YOUR RESPONSES WE WILL APPROACH ITS REALIZATION. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR TIME. I WILL BE IN CONTACT AGAIN SOON.

The string of thirteen tweets were retweeted by Undertale creator Toby Fox on his personal account as well, though about an hour before they began, Fox tweeted an introduction of sorts. The tweet stated: “It’s cold. It’s as if everything had been enveloped in a black wind… You didn’t realize it yet, but… it seems that there’s someone who wants to talk to you.” Fox wrapped up the mysterious cliffhanger with answers, but in a way that left us with more questions than we started with. Fox stated that he wants to make something new and that he would be seeking feedback in 24 hours time (roughly 6 a.m. PDT) from Undertale fans (specifically those who have completed the game).

What new project is Fox working on? Possibly a sequel to Undertale, or maybe a completely separate and new game. What kind of feedback is sought? Is it a survey or maybe even an early demo of the game, based on the system requirements? Speculation runs wild, and the only way to find out for sure is to wait out the clock when the next tweet comes out sometime tomorrow morning.

Undertale, originally released in 2015, has become a fan favorite in both the indie genre as well as the single-player RPG scene. Receiving critical acclaim from most major gaming publications, Undertale was praised specifically for its writing and narrative as well as the simple-to-use yet subtly intricate combat system, which players could avoid altogether based on the way they choose to progress through the story. The success of the game has led to it being released on multiple platforms, most recently ported to the Nintendo Switch. It’s no wonder why the sudden slew of tweets hinting at a new game has garnered so much buzz.
