Undertale Patch Adds New Dialogue And Hints At A New Character

Earlier this week ravenously popular indie game Undertale underwent its very first update. When initially approached about what this patch would mean for players, game creator Toby Fox denied that the update would be anything major.

Seeming unlikely any UNDERTALE patch I complete will contain anything other than bugfixes.

However, since its launch, players have taken to the game and began scouring high and low for any deviations from the already odd Undertale norm. And trust Undertale fans to be anything less than meticulous.

Fans have reportedly delved straight into the game’s code, and discovered new dialogue options, some that heavily hint at a new character.

‘Who is this newcomer?’ you may ask. Many speculate it to be one of the elements eluding players since the game’s launch–a mystery wrapped in enigma. The eerie yet unexplained circumstances previously surrounding Gaster might be surfacing at last.

Players back up this claim with new dialogue discovered in San’s lab, thanks to the efforts of Redditor kiwikiwi591.

Who is Gaster?

Gaster is a character whose presence is entirely absent from the game in all but allusions and memories. Theorized to be related to skeletal brothers, Sans and Papyrus, Gaster supposedly was a skeleton scientist who accidentally experimented himself outside space and time. This theory has captured the obsessive attention of many an Undertale fanatic–some even going so far as to construct an entire website  dedicated to the curious character. Further evidence found by players is an altered soundfile.

Other updates include checky meta-references to the game’s patch, and perhaps a foreshadowing of further updates to come.

Whether or not this patch pertains clues pointing toward Gaster, we don’t know for certain. There is no confirmation as of yet. It is, however, suspiciously pointing towards a canonization of Gaster in the Undertale-verse.

Meanwhile, Toby Fox, who has never shied away from attention on the internet, took to his twitter to shed some light on the issue of fans with sticky-data-fingers.

BTW, just want to clarify, the lack of new content is in no way due to people datamining the game. No hard feelings towards those people. The only reason I tried to get people not to datamine is so fans could experience things before they were found in the code… Anyway, I have no problem with that kind of stuff now. After all, game hacking leads to things like fan translations, which are great.

No matter what, the new Undertale patch has definitely brought many back to the game and given even the flintiest of fans a new conundrum to tirelessly puzzle over.
