Maybe you’ve heard of Undertale, maybe you haven’t. If not, you’re inevitably going to. The indie game released on September 15th of this year, and has rapidly gained rabid following within weeks. The RPG has captured the hearts of many with its witty, internet-oriented humor, stirring soundtrack, and compelling story. The fandom is quickly becoming almost the video game equivalent of Dr. Who, according to Kotaku’s Nathan Grayson. What makes Undertale so special is the ability the player holds to show monsters wither mercy and compassion, or complete, unforgiving brutality–and the game reflects your choices.
Players control the androgynous Frisk who has fallen into the cavernous world underneath the surface of the Earth called Underworld, where the lonely inhabitants banished from the top side of Earth are called “Monsters” and as Frisk, players decide how to interact with them. That’s the beauty behind the game–no one has to die. Undertale has the eerie ability to mirror your choices, however, as either your benevolence or barbarism is reflected in character dialogue, the music, and even replays–Ben Davis at Destructoid warns those who play a particular blood-thirty Frisk that “murder followed by reload to see what might have been…well, you get what you deserve.”
Well, fans of the game can give this underground indie game all the PDA it deserves by flying their fandom flags loud and proud with Undertale official merchandise. Readily available for preorder are posters, stylish shirts going for $24 USD, stickers, and plushie on the way. Buyers can pinch their pennies and purchase a money saving bundle with the Determination Combo–two shirts, the poster, set of stickers at the discounted cost of $68, with retailers offering additional discounts.
