Ubisoft’s Avatar Game Not Coming Anytime Soon

Ubisoft, the publisher behind variety of widely poplar series such as Assassin’s Creed, Watch Dogs, and The Division, has confirmed that they currently have a new game based on James Cameron’s Avatar in development. The team that will be in charge of developing the game will be the studio behind The Division series, Ubisoft Massive, as well as a new studio called Ubisoft Stockholm.

The company also hired Patrick Bach, a former Battlefield developer, this past August to lead the team. However, they have recently stated that the game is still quite a ways away from release. According to IGN, Ubisoft stated that the new title will not release until after the start of their 2021 fiscal year which is April 1, 2020.

Avatar is one of the biggest and most powerful entertainment brands … we have great plans for the new one, with a very strong studio and engine. The movie will be released end of 2020, so our game won’t be released before FY21.” Ubisoft’s first Avatar game was released alongside the movie in 2009, so it looks like they will take the same approach with the sequels for the series as well. Avatar 2 is set to be released in theaters in 2020, while Avatar 5 will be released by 2025.

When the game was initially announced to be in development earlier this year, the company didn’t reveal any platforms, release plans, gameplay, or plot information at the time. We now know that the game will be coming to consoles as well as PC, but there is still little to nothing known about the project as of late. During the initial announcement, Cameron stated that “With the power of Massive’s Snowdrop game engine and the team’s passion and obsessive focus on detail, we know they’re the right group to bring the beauty and danger of Pandora to life.”
