Ubisoft Cancels Its Immortals Fenyx Rising Sequel

A mythological open-world game known as Immortals Fenyx Rising, will not see a sequel as Ubisoft cancels the project. According to multiple developmental sources, company leadership ultimately decided to cancel the upcoming sequel earlier this month due to challenges stemming around establishing the IP.

Even though the original game saw mostly positive reviews, Ubisoft considered a sequel to not be within their best interests. Initially, Ubisoft’s intention was to create a franchise around the game as journalist Jeff Grubb wrote that the game was to expand it mythological lore into Greece and other Hawaiian Polynesian myths.

The original game saw players controlling a forgotten hero on a quest to save the Greek gods. The game even saw a DLC which built upon Chinese mythology by having players take control of a new hero by the name of Ku who was a martial artist.

Back in January, sources told VGC that its future plans for Immortals was cast in uncertainty and doubt because the company was more focused on its most prominent brands which Immortals was not considered to be. Continually, Ubisoft said it had canceled three other unannounced games in addition to Immortals. Ubisoft felt that it was best to strengthen and focus on its most prominent IPs and live services over the holiday season.

Because Ubisoft has six Assassin’s Creed games currently in development, they made the decision to cancel Immortals because much of its attention was dedicated to those Assassin’s Creed games. Although they understood that Immortals was able to find a modest audience, a lot of that was due to discounting. More importantly, Immortal’s sales were 70% less than that of what Assassin’s Creed Valhalla managed to achieve over a similar timeframe. Additionally, because Ubisoft has so many Assassin’s Creed games in development, Ubisoft wants to increase its staff to over 40% in the coming years to prepare for those games. This means less attention is devoted to other games like Immortals.
