Ubisoft announced this week that two games will cease development and close online servers. After years of low interest, Ghost Recon Phantoms and The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot will be shutting their doors forever.
Phantoms was originally released back in 2012. Ubisoft released statement on August 25th detailing how the decision was made. The studio took time to thank the developers “tremendous undertaking” for their efforts to take Ghost Recon in a different direction. The game’s servers will shut down on December 1st of this year.
Players will not be able to purchase “Ghost Coins” going forward, but Ubisoft recommends spending them if you have some, as you will not receive a refund for your purchase, claiming that it is “in line with our terms of sale.” You will also not be able to transfer the coins to any other Ubisoft game.
Ubisoft has also released F.A.Q. that covers a large amount of questions players might have about the game. They claim that the game is closing as it was “not as successful as we had hoped” and that the decision did not come easy.
The other game disappearing into the nether is the free-to-play The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot, which will end all services on October 25th. Their reasoning was similar to their Ghost Recon explanation. They claim the game was “not as successful as we had hoped for, so we had to make the decision to close the game.” In fact, their F.A.Q. released for TMQFEL is almost identical to that of Ghost Recons.
Both games do not have a direct sequel in the works, nor are there any plans for their future. Ghost Recon however has some projects in the works, such as Ghost Recon: Wildlands. It is set to release in 2017. In addition to that, a Ghost Recon movie produced by Michael Bayis is in production.
