Evolve and it’s developers Turtle Rock Studios had a hard run with the game. The game was offering DLC even before the game was even revealed and having add-on content totaling $136. Then the hype machine worked fans into frenzy over the game until it finally came out to middling reviews. While the Metacritic score is 77, the vast majority of user reviews were negative with some stating that the game just got old after a while.
So the game fell into obscurity until this July went it came back under new name, Evolve: Stage 2. This version of the game was free to play and allowed anyone to play the game. Once that happened, player counts skyrocketed on Steam with the game even breaking the top twenty. Things were good, Turtle Rock even released new playable character. But the game never made it to consoles and now it never will.
Yesterday, on the Evolve community forums, Turtle Rock announced that they would be ending support for the game and confirmed that Stage 2 would never come to consoles.
In the post, Turtle Rock said that it wasn’t their choice saying when you aren’t self-funded and don’t own the IP you don’t get to make the call. They went on to thank everyone who supported the game. The studio also thanked the now debunked THQ for helping them start their own studio and 2K, the publisher that picked Turtle Rock up when THQ went under.
They also announced that they will be hosting an Evolve-themed stream on October 27th as a way to say goodbye. The stream will start at 12 PM PST and air on the Evolve Twitch channel.
It’s not clear if they will be shutting down the servers for the game, although, they most likely won’t if there are still enough people playing the game.
Evolve: Stage 2 is still available through Steam and the original game can still be purchased on Xbox One and PS4.
