Sony Interactive Entertainment will be rolling out major leveling changes to PlayStation’s trophy system tonight. The announcement was made earlier today on the PlayStation Blog. The update boasts new trophy levels and icons. Sony also introducing a new way to calculate trophies for players. The console’s trophy level system was first introduced with the PlayStation 3 in 2008.
Currently, the trophy levels range from “1-100”. With the new update, PlayStation will increase the range to “1- 999”. Thankfully, gamers won’t have to start their trophy collection from scratch. PlayStation has made it clear that trophy counts won’t be lost, instead they will be adjusted to fit into the new expanded range. The blog post gives an example of the adjustment saying, “if your current Trophy level is 12, your new level will jump to somewhere in the low 200’s.” It also notes that the exact level will depend on the number of trophies and grades a player has earned.
A new level calculation system will also be implemented tonight. PlayStation promises a “more optimized and rewarding” structure than ever before. Players can expect to move faster through early levels as well as consistent level increases. Platinum trophies will be the most valuable as they will count more towards level progression.
There will also be cosmetic updates coming to trophy icons. These changes will be seen on next-gen console PlayStation 5 and the PlayStation app at a later date. The current icon is a single gold star. The updates will clearly differentiate between Bronze (levels 1-299), Silver (levels 300-599), Gold (levels 600-998) and Platinum (levels 999). Additionally, icons within each level will have subtle distinctions in order to gage how close players are to the next rank.
There’s nothing more rewarding than earning recognition after countless hours of gameplay and Playstation’s new changes seem to do just that. The trophy level updates will debut tonight in North America and tomorrow in Europe, there hasn’t been any word on other regions just yet.
