Today, PlayStation revealed a detailed look at the PlayStation 5’s internal components with a teardown video breaking Sony’s next-generation console apart to showcase how everything works. PlayStation 5 has been in development since 2015 and the team has spent the past five years designing and developing the console. Recently, Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment talked about the design of the console saying “various technologies were used in PlayStation 5 and lot of effort was put into creating a futuristic design.” Now, on the PlayStation Blog, Masayasu Ito EVP, Hardware Engineering, and Operation, Sony Interactive Entertainment breaks down what goes go inside the console.
Talking about inside the console, Masayasu Ito said: “Our team values a well thought out, beautifully designed architecture. Inside the console is an internal structure looking neat and tidy, which means that there aren’t any unnecessary components and the design is efficient. As a result, we’re able to achieve our goal of creating a product with a high degree of perfection and quality.”
The PlayStation 5 is larger than the PlayStation 4. It is 390mm high, 104mm wide, and 260mm deep. The large size has resulted in a dramatic improvement in performance in terms of processing power and quietness. “We felt it was inevitable to make a generational leap in terms of performance in order to deliver a new, next-generation gaming experience,” Ito said. “However, to do so, we had to balance every aspect of the system, from focusing on reducing the noise level to enhancing the cooling capacity, more than ever before.”
The front of the console has a USB Type-C port and a Type-A port with Hi-Speed USB support. The two rows on the front side are air vents. The rear has two Type-A ports with SuperSpeed USB support, a LAN port, an HDMI port, and a power port. The entire rear side is the exhaust port. PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition is set to launch on November 12, 2020 for $499 and $399 respectively. The last PlayStation 5 Showcase revealed what games will be launching with the system including Demon’s Souls, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and more.
