With the exciting release of the first chapter of Deltarune, many questions have been raised. Luckily, Toby Fox has prepared answers. For the unaware, Deltarune is the newest project by Toby Fox, the man behind the incredibly successful indie RPG, Undertale. The first chapter came out seemingly out of nowhere on Halloween, with the only hint of its release made cryptically on the Undertale Twitter 24 hours beforehand. A day following the arrival of the first chapter, Toby Fox revealed his thoughts and addressed the questions people had.
First and foremost, he touches upon one of the central questions that seems to be recurring around Deltarune, which is whether or not the project is a sequel. He explains that the world of Deltarune is different from the world of Undertale, and that players shouldn’t worry too much about it as “they might not be able to properly enjoy it.” Another question mentioned was when the next chapter was coming out, which came with a more complicated answer. While he states that 7 years is the longest amount of time he would be willing to spend on a project, he is also planning to release all of the next chapters at once, so it’ll either come out within 7 years or not at all. He specifically states that he needs a team if Deltarune is going to be finished, and while he hadn’t started making a team at the time of writing his thoughts, it seems that some people are interested.
Outside of what has been released, Deltarune is almost entirely unfinished. He states that the story has been completed and there are a few songs that are also completed but, “no programming or final art has been done” outside of the first chapter (which may be changed as well during development). He ends his thoughts with a simple “Don’t forget.”. It could be just a coincidence or it could be a nod to something added in an update of Undertale (possible spoilers!).
