TMNT: Mutants in Manhattan Launches Today

While pretty much every game this week will be overshadowed by the behemoth that is Overwatch, let’s not forget about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:Mutants in Manhattan, which launched for PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC.  The game was released today, accompanied by a new launch trailer showing off some new bosses.

The launch trailer gives us a much better look at Krang, the pink alien blob inside a robot suit.  We also see the new Mega Krang, a boss that towers over the turtles.  This may or may not be the final boss, and hopefully the game has something even bigger that it hasn’t spoiled yet.

Although reviews of the game haven’t come out yet, some outlets have voiced their opinion on the game, some of which isn’t very positive.  The amazon reviews for the PS4 version of the game say that the combat is fun, but the lack of local co-op is big letdown.  It’s surprising that a Ninja Turtles game doesn’t have local co-op, but this issue has been addressed by  Activision.  Producer Robert Conkey stated that Platinum games really wanted the couch co-op, but having split screen messed up the game’s frame rate too much, so it was removed.

Other early impressions of the game also haven’t been very good.  Digital Foundry has done a little review of the game, and it’s mostly negative.  The biggest complaints come from the game’s framerate of 30fps which makes it run slow, the game’s length which is only about three hours, and that the combat and missions are very repetitive.

After the success of Transformers Devastation, many people (including me) were very excited to see Platinum Games take on another beloved 80s franchise.  But much like Legend of Korra, TMNT: Mutants in Manhattan may be one of the few duds in Platinum Games’ stellar catalog.  We’ll see what other gaming outlets think of the game when reviews are released later this week.
