Rocket League Now Supporting Xbox / PC Cross-Platform Multiplayer

Back in March, Chris Charla, Director of ID@Xbox, released a statement surrounding the Xbox One and cross-platform multiplayer.

Cross-platform has been the subject of much discussion since the Xbox One launched, with many users looking for content supported on both the home console and a Windows 10 machine.  While Microsoft has made efforts in its own realm (ie. Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition), the company also stated it was looking at other possibilities:

In addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we’re enabling developers to support cross-network play as well. This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks – including other console and PC networks.

Immediately afterwords, Charla went on to confirm one of the first games to support cross-platform would be Psyonix’s Rocket League:

We’re thrilled to confirm that Psyonix’s Rocket League will be one of the first games to take advantage of this new capability by enabling cross-network play between Xbox One and PC players, with an open invitation for other networks to participate as well.

Today, Rocket League players on both PC and Xbox will be able to play with each other, each on their respective machine.  This feature has been available for the PS4 edition of Rocket League since its launch.

Still, there is minimal news on the Xbox Live / PSN cross-network support.  In the statement, Microsoft confirms it is open to the possibility, but fans are still waiting for word from Sony on the matter.  If it were to come to fruition, Rocket League would be the first game ever to support PC, Xbox and Playstation cross-platform multiplayer.

The massively popular car-football mashup has seen large success on all consoles, with DLC ranging from new car models to new modes such as basketball and ice hockey.
