The competitive 2D platformer where speed is key, SpeedRunners, returns with a brand new sequel, sporting flashy 2.5D, cel-shaded graphics, and a Steam playtest available just around the corner! Race with up to eight players online or locally—and up to 64 in the all-new tournament mode—through brand new levels using the items, wall jumps, and grapple hooks at your disposal to leave all of your rivals behind as the screen closes in around you.

The new art style is sure to excite players, as the original Speedrunners’ flat art style, akin to a comic book, has been perfectly transitioned into the third dimension. The sequel sports a fresh coat of 3D modeled paint, despite retaining its nature as a competitive side-scrolling platformer. Fair Play Labs has brought their colorful cast of characters from the original 2013 classic to life by employing the use of cel-shading, bringing just the pop of color needed to reinforce the series’ identity in 2.5D. Speedrunners’ change in art style allows for more clarification on the main cast of characters’ designs as well, as due to the far more limited art style of the original, each character of the main cast seemed to simply wear a full-body spandex suit. However, in the sequel’s jump in graphical style, subtle redesigns have been revealed as extra details, such as satchels, belts, boots, gloves, and even joint padding are given more weight and visual presence in each character’s design.

SpeedRunners 2: King of Speed was first revealed back in April 2025 during the Triple-I Initiative showcase; however, alongside the announcement of a global playtest, the game’s release window has finally been revealed. SpeedRunners 2: King of Speed is set to release for PC via Steam first in the second half of 2025, while PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch versions are scheduled for release in 2026.
