‘The Sinking City’ Gets a Creepy New Story Trailer

The Sinking City publisher Bigben Games recently released a new gameplay trailer, aptly titled ‘A Close Shave.’ In a video full of imagery to demonstrate the deteriorating mental state of The Sinking City‘s protagonist, the trailer is less straight gameplay and more the story of Charles Winfield Reed’s battle against ‘imaginary’ tentacles. However, the trailer does offer a few looks at the game’s world—and what Reed will be doing in it.

In the trailer, we see Reed attempting to shave himself as tentacles sprout from his face. He shaves them off, but are they really imaginary? Time will tell, when players are able to fully experience Reed’s adventure and potential madness next year. In the meantime, the trailer also shows off a few pieces of Oakmont, Massachusetts, where the game is set. Taking place in a dark, alternate 1920s setting, the game is not a direct adaptation of any Lovecraft work, but rather Lovecraft-inspired. According to developer FrogwaresThe Sinking City is a new entry in Lovecraft’s universe, created by “devoted fans of his novels.”

In terms of gameplay, The Sinking City is decidedly an investigation game. Players will “step into the shoes of a private detective who arrives in the fictional city of Oakmont, suffering from unprecedented floods of clearly supernatural origins,” as the game’s description reads. Frogwares is aiming for 30-40 hours of playtime for the game including main and side quests, “but it can easily go longer than that if you’re a completionist or you want to see all the different endings.”

MXDWN was able to get a firsthand look at the game back in June, during E3. You can check out our coverage of the game here. The Sinking City is set to release on March 21 for the PC, PlayStation, and Xbox One.

Glenn Carreau: Hi! I'm Glenn: recent college grad specializing in interactive arts and media, writer, game creator and connoisseur, pop culture junkie, and semi-professional fan-artist and blogger. In my free time, I function as an unnecessarily specific gaming encyclopedia. I also play the violin, binge crime/detective procedural shows (still not sure why), and do a large amount of digital painting. I'm probably too attached to Dragon Age, but not really inclined to do anything about it. I'm a huge fan of cosplay, foxes, the prose of Jenny Lawson, and Strong Female Characters™.
