Horror has historically been versatile as a game genre, mixing with countless other types of games like adventure, action, and mystery over the years. The upcoming title, The Road of Dust and Sorrow, offers an even bolder combination with the mix of horror with a cozy tone as players take down hordes of mindless enemies in a ruined world. Developed by Painted Black Games and published by Silver Lining Interactive, The Road of Dust and Sorrow received its release date alongside a trailer earlier today.
The trailer places viewers right into the action of a woman fighting off enemies both at range and up close in a 2D art style. The game’s Steam store page identifies this character as Katherine, mother of Ava, who players will be tasked with protecting throughout the game. The trailer takes the form of a message from Katherine, alluding to her own demise and explaining the cruel state of the world. The monsters that players fight against are called Dusters, twisted humans who were taken over by a plant meant to end famine. Players will also face off against the Pastor on their way towards a safe haven, a man intent on using people as soil.
The game will follow a 2D action-adventure style, with a focus placed on fighting back the Dusters wherever players find them. Throughout the game, players will also encounter environmental puzzles and the potential to unlock hidden paths and new areas. The most unique aspect of the game is in the protection of Ava, who must be safeguarded at all costs while she follows the player.
While the combination of horror and cozy games into one may be a great thing for fans of both styles, it could also be a way of introducing new players to one or the other. Those curious will have the chance to experience it when The Road of Dust and Sorrow releases on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC.
