Just last month we reported that the PlayStation 5 had shipped more than 40 million units since it launched in November 2020. Fast forward to today, less than few weeks later, and that number has now increased a bit more. Through their latest financial report, Sony has revealed that the PlayStation 5 has now sold more than 41.7 million units world wide. The report, which accounts for every statistic ending on June 30, can be seen here and is for the first major quarter of the year. This report also states that the company shipped around 3.3 million consoles between April and June, making it a one million difference on a year to year basis from 2022.
In addition, Sony also revealed that revenue from their online subscription service, the PlayStation Network, saw a big spike in numbers. Over the course of those three months, the service brought in approximately $871,323. That makes this their highest earning quarter in the past year. This huge uptick in revenue is more than likely attributed to the premium aspect of their online service, the PlayStation Plus subscriptions, which boasts a few different options to choose from. Interestingly enough, Sony did not provide the total number of subscribers for the service in their report. This is unusual as they have normally added this statistic in past earning reports, including the previous one where it was stated there were around 47.4 million signed up for the service.
If anything, we’d expect those subscription numbers to have gone up, as the company sold a plethora of units in that small timeframe which would give way to new people on the network. Sony did however mention a new sales statistics for their titles. The company stated in their report that they games across both the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 sold 56.6 million copies, which is a significant year to year jump with 47.2 million sold in 2022. We expect those numbers to skyrocket once Fall 2023 rolls around as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will launch on October 20.
