The Physical Version of Spyro Reignited Trilogy is One Game and Two Downloads

The highly-anticipated Spyro Reignited Trilogy, which consists of the three PlayStation 1 Spyro the Dragon titles, is going to be somewhat divided. The physical version will only hold the first game, while the other two must be downloaded to play.

There are many people who are excited for the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, as it marks a remastering of the first three Spyro the Dragon games. However, according to the official pre-order page, it appears that only Spyro the Dragon will be on the retail disc. The other two, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage! and Spyro: Year of the Dragon, must be downloaded. This is likely to be a disappointment for fans, since the physical edition would have represented a collection of the first three games in a single convenient package.

According to Destructoid, who asked Activision about this division in the trilogy, they responded:

The global launch date of Spyro Reignited Trilogy is Sept. 21; and we’re excited for fans to play all three reignited games on that day. As with most games today, downloading an update after purchase is quite common. The language on packaging and on the web is to let players know the requirements for Spyro Reignited Trilogy.

What’s the reasoning behind this division? A theory, according to some Redditors, is that only the first game was ready for printing, and the other two games are being worked on up to the game’s release date in order to avoid a delay. It’s a common practice among certain games, most notably the category of sports titles that are released annually. Let’s hope that the second and third Spyro games will be ready for launch.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy was announced April 4, and the games within are being made by Toys for Bob, which created the Skylanders franchise/spin-off. It will be available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 21.
