During Capcom’s NEXT event, the publisher highlighted several upcoming games including the recently announced Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, and Resident Evil 7 on iOS. While talking about developing Resident Evil 7 for iOS, Capcom also confirmed that they are in development on the next mainline entry in the series with Resident Evil 7 Director Koshi Nakanishi directing the new game.
Talking about the next game, Nakanishi said “it was difficult to figure out what to do after Resident Evil 7. But I found it, and to be honest it feels substantial. I can’t share any details yet, but I hope you’re excited for the day I can.”
Back in May, it was reported that the next Resident Evil game will come as early as January. Insider Dusk Golem, who has a strong track record of revealing confidential information about upcoming video games before they are made public, said that the next game will be revealed very soon.
“The possible delay I had heard murmurs about can be pushed aside,” they said. “Resident Evil 9 should be revealed pretty soon and release next year. If what I heard previously holds true, [it] should be in January. It’ll have had about seven years in development.”
Golem also said that Resident Evil 9 stared development in 2018 as the potential eighth entry. At the time, Resident Evil Village was seen as a spin-off before becoming the official eighth entry.
Golem also claimed that Resident Evil 9 will change things for the series with open-world elements.
” Dragon’s Dogma 2 expanded RE Engine functionality for open-world games, the two other games building on this tech are Monster Hunter Wild and Resident Evil 9.”
