The Mechanics of Gear 5’s Multiplayer Progression and Microtransactions

The upcoming third person shooter game being developed by The Coalition, Gears 5, is coming to gamers on September 10th. At the inside Xbox Live event, fans were given an inside look at one of the trailers for Gears 5, showing off a number of features such as Horde Mode: Ultimate as well as showing off many characters unique abilities.

According to Gamespot, the game will include microtransactions that will cover a number of objects from cosmetics to DLC characters, but certain items that you can get for free through gameplay will not be available through microtransactions. This does go along with what the director of Multiplayer Design Ryan Cleven stated when he told fans that the microtransactional aspects of the game would be “player friendly”.

The game also includes a mechanic known as Tour of Duty which is a battle pass-style mechanic. The player can complete challenges and collect various items as they level up. However, one aspect where this battle pass style differs is that it is completely free. Cleven stated that he believed that it should be free as a part of the $60 AAA gaming experience. This is rather different from games like DOTA 2 or Fortnite, in which players have to pay for a battle pass system.

Cleven has also stated that The Coalition plans to release several large expansions to the multiplayer content of Gears 5 every three months. These expansions will include new content as well as new characters. Another new feature that is being added to the game is a feature called Map Builder, which allows players to customize various stages in numerous ways. Map builder lets players manipulate enemy aggression level, as well as modify the lighting on tiles, and place various traps for your enemies. Gears 5 will release on Xbox One and the PC on September 10.
