Endnight Games has announced that its survival-horror game The Forest has a new early access release date of May 22 on Steam. The announcement also comes with a new trailer that gives the best look at the game so far, and it looks even scarier than before. The Forest will support the Oculus Rift when it’s released.
This is an open-world surrounded by dense trees, and rugged hills, where you begin with a single piece of information: you, and only you, have survived the plane crash. You are stuck in an island full of weird cannibals, where you are fine at daylight but if you go into a cave during the day or travel at night, that’s another story. It is basically a forest that you are wandering around, which your survival skills will be put to test. In order for players to “find” the story behind this island and the cannibals, the player will have to investigate, find different pieces of information that will need to be put together. It will be up to players to work out what that ending is and how to uncover it, as the game will never give guidelines of what to be doing or when.
During an interview with Eurogamer:
“We wanted to create a world where we could drop the player into and give them free range to do whatever they want, similar to something like Minecraft where a lot of the fun comes from decisions that you make.”
Said creative director Ben Falcone during the interview.
These cannibals will not only be evil, but hungry, and they’ll be smarter than you think. They are like the creepers or enderman in Minecraft where they are stalking you for awhile, staying at a safe distance from you, and they will even call others in order to get to you. These cannibals are emotionally-aware as you kill one of them, they will either cry or risk their lives for their family member.
“We have tides that rise and fall and that might block off certain areas of the world at different times of day. The world is always changing and you can change it, too. Every tree and plant can be chopped down or burned down accidentally.”
There are few things in this trailer that we haven’t seen before:
- The first trailer that was up, showed your character ending up on a mysterious island and is the only survivor from the plane crash. Though with this newest trailer, you can see that your character was traveling on the plane with a child.
- You get to see traps and also the games crafting and building system.
- The hunting and cooking system also includes spearfishing.
- You get to see the new, bigger, mutated cannibals.
