The Elder Scrolls Online has been in development for approximately seven years. Bethesda Softworks will only be publishing, with development duties being handled by ZeniMax Online Studios, which was founded in 2007 and is headed by former Mythic Entertainment director Matt Firor.
The game is a prequel to the three most recent Elder Scrolls games: Skyrim, Oblivion and Morrowind, being set a thousand years prior to Skyrim in the continent of Tamriel. Although most of the continent will be traversable, parts of it will be locked away for development of future content. This has led to a rather controversial $14.99 per-month subscription fee, which Bethesda VP of Public Relations Pete Hines justified by stating: “We feel pretty strongly about the support we’re going to have for the game and what you’re going to get for those dollars […] We’re also very confident in our ability to support it with content. And not content of the magnitude of, it’s a new month, here’s a new sword or here’s a funny hat–but content that is real and significant and it feels like regular and consistent DLC releases.”
The Elder Scrolls Online, which was recently given Mature rating by the ESRB for its sexual innuendo, drinking games and severed heads, is also being developed for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but those versions will launch later in June. A specific day has not been given.
