As it is every year, one of the least kept secrets in the video game industry is what players can expect from the next Assassin’s Creed, with leaks coming out prior to the next game’s official reveal. One of the reported upcoming titles is a remake of the critically-acclaimed Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. While the game has still not been officially announced, a new report from the French publication Juex Vidéo Magazine has details on the remake from a variety of anonymous sources.

Ubisoft Singapore is leading development on the remake. They previously worked on the naval elements of Black Flag and was the developer behind Skull and Bones. They are getting support from other studios such as Ubisoft Bordeaux who was the lead on Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Ubisoft Belgrade.

Jeux Vidéo says that some of the present-day elements from the original are getting removed and replaced with more pirate-era content, resulting in a longer game than the original. Four hours of extra content will be added, including a section involving Mary Read which was removed in the original game.

Sources have confirmed that the Black Flag remake will feature more of the RPG-like mechanics like those in the recent Assassin’s Creed titles, specifically the inventory and loot systems, as well as combat and weapon and equipment stats. Ubisoft is also planning to remove loading times which will enable players to sail to each location in one unbroken sequence. They also plan to add more content to the smaller islands.

The remake will reportedly use the latest version of Ubisoft’s Anvil engine, which was used for Assasin’s Creed Shadows, and will naturally look better than the original. Jeux Vidéo says that it’s not trying to be a complete remake like Resident Evil 2 or 3, nor is it a simple remaster.

Sources say that the game is looking to release in March 2026 but one source suggested that they weren’t entirely confident the target date will be reached given how much work is left to be done.
